Hi there Tantoo! We met in your home in the south of Calgary in 2004 just before I left for Mexico. I helped you sell your house and obtain one in Bowness. You bought my vacuum cleaner and I gave you a leather sculpture of a face to take care of for me.
I am not concerned about the sculpture other than I am interested to know if you did keep it over the years. It seemed somewhat spiritual to me at the time. I got it from a native lady in Calgary.
While trying to find you, I see all of your accomplishments since we last met Kudos to you!!!! You certainly are a positive influence on this planet.
The reason I am trying to connect is that you may, or may not recall, I have a sister in the arts -- an actress quite accomplished in her own right - Sailor Moon, George Shrinks, Strawberry Shortcake and various Musical Theatre projects in New York and the eastern seaboard, as well as other mediums . I recently was talking to her and she would like to connect with you to discuss a project concerning indigeous people. She lives in Victoria.. You can google her if you wish to confirm what I am saying.
Normally, I am just an interested party in the arts. When she spoke of this - I thought of you and then tried to find you and lo and behold look at all of your accomplishments since we last met --- wow
I have remarried my ex-husband and am living in the Yucatan now --- and raising two grandchildren. The Mayan population here are facinating people. They have retained their own language and culture through it all. email me if you have time - just to say hello and/or to explore the possibility of you connecting with my sister - I am not used to public forums so if you have time ---
I lost track of Marilyn when she went up north.
Best regards
Dale Sherin

When I watch you it feels like home. Culture defines people while on the earth, but the spirit of mankind which reside over the entire world, are connected as one.
Over the years I have seen many people that identify to some degree with Native American/First Nations people, myself included, but they do not have that background. I think there are many reasons for this. We may have a background that seems to lack cultural identity, or any sense of community. For me I think this is true of western society in general. Some of us want a closer connection to the earth, and in some cases to the Creator. We study, we learn, we think about the history. We identify. Regardless of the reasons, we have developed a heart, or even a type of love for the Native Americans/First Nations people. Sometimes we don't understand it, but it is there for sure.
When Buffalo Bird Woman speaks of singing to the corn to help it grow, I understand that (or at least I think I do). It is beautiful and natural. When she laments over no one singing to the corn anymore, I feel the sadness too.
So where do we go from here? Here far do we take the identifying? I realize each person has his/her own journey but is it appropriate to use a Native American type of name?
I had a dream more than ten years ago that means more to me now than it did back then, and it seems important. So I write poems and stories and use what I have to hopefully make a difference. It is all I know how to do with what I believe to be within me. I write about the people yet I know that I am not Native American/First Nations. It is difficult to reconcile the two.
I would appreciate any ideas that you or your readers might have.
I recently saw the film Dances With Wolves again after many years. I view it differently now than I did in the 1990's. Besides the beauty of the film, I think what makes it such a wonderful film is the portrayal of the people. There is some of the typical Hollywood (like the emphasis on the main character) but I appreciate the effort of trying to make the people seem real. I love the sense of humor!
For example I love the first scene at the Lakota camp where Ten Bears is asking his wife what is wrong with Kicking Bird. This is a great exchange between the two of them -- and then he tells her to make sure the meat is soft because his teeth hurt! Later the people take up a collection so that Dances With Wolves can get married. There is more humor and the people seem even more real.
I thought you did a wonderful job with portraying Black Shawl. You added a strength and depth to the character that was amazing.
I like the ending of the book version a whole lot better than the film. The book focuses on the people and the wisdom of Ten Bears.
For me the ending of the film version is when Ten Bears is holding the Spanish helmet and talks about the coming of the whites.
These are just some thoughts I had. I wish you good health and peace.
I am seeking help for the Comanche Powwow in Texas. An historic treaty was signed in 1847 between the Comanche Nation (lead by Buffalo Hump) and the German settlers (lead by John O. Measubach). As a result of this treaty, the soldiers at Fort Martin Scott never had to fight a single battle with the fearsome Comance. But now, there is no peace. The Comance Powwow has been banned by the Former Texas Rangers Foundation. Please sign my petition at HonorTheTreaty.com. Thank you.
Dear Mrs. Cardinal, through your brother i took notice of your home page. While clicking arround i found a serie of videos about the way of treatment of the Canadian governrnent and was really shocked. I am a member of the AAVAZ.org and proposed to pick up that issue and to heighten the pressure to prime minister Stephen Harper. AAVAZ is a strong orgnisation and i´m sure to reache something yet this year. I shared these videos at facebook to inform so much people as possible in Germany. I am with you all and will stand up for your rights wherever i can do.
I have always loved anything you were acting in or even protesting against wrongdoings. You are a wonderful actress. I am 5 years younger than you I see. I just watched The Lost Child on the Hallmark Channel with you in it, and Irene Bedard, another actress I like to see. I saw you in a movie with Tim Matheson also at one time, can't remember the name of it, and I just adore him also. I wish you nothing but lots more blessings with good movies to come. Happy New Year 2013.
Hi Tantoo: I interviewed you by the Lake after the Healing Walk in August. My book on the pipeline and the tar sands will be coming out next April. Would you like to see it (You're in it!), and perhaps write a short blurb? I can send you a PDF copy by email, or I will have hard copies a little later on. A word from you would really help!
Hi Tantoo! I'm really glad I had the chance to meet you in person (more than one VIFF occasion too!) Have you wanted to do any writing, and if so, what would you like to write about?
Id just like to express how moved i was with your part in the vagina monologues... and as you being a native woman would know how important this would be for us to come out and speak about the abuse that has happened. Im from Saddlelake Alberta and i strongly believe something like that would help the cree woman of my nation! love you work! im one of your biggest fans thank you!
